Colonized from the 1930s, Tupa had a thriving early development, strengthened by the expansion of coffee, but in recent decades its economy is suffering from severe stagnation, still dependent on primary production. Some reasons for hope of better future have emerged in recent years, however. Rich in water resources and relying on a district (Varpas) with a tradition of immigrants from Latvia, the city has recently declared a tourist resort by the state government, something that might be further explored. Moreover, the city saw the establishment of a unit of São Paulo State University and the expansion of local private colleges.
The region where is located the tourist resort of Tupa was nothing but jungle. Luis de Sousa Leao, Entrepreneur of origin of Pernambuco, in the mid-1920s, he chose an area located in said spigot divider of the watersheds of rivers and Ugly Fish (or Aguapeí) on a path designed Companhia Paulista Railway (later FEPASA Current and All), for the edification of future city. The founder foresaw the need to build a key center between regions Sorocabana Northwest and the state of Sao Paulo.
The official historiography hides many of the events that marked the early years of clearing, including the massacre of indigenous Caingangues the region that were honored with the name of the town and its planned routes. The settlers found much resistance from the natives and the confrontation was inevitable, resulting in the death of many Indians in the region. According to the records, however, peace was reached with the mediation of an Indian call Vanuíre. Because of this important Indian influence, Tupa hosts one of the most important museums in the country dedicated to the topic, the History Museum and Educational Vanuíre India.
The subdivision plan was put into effect after October 12, 1929, the date considered as the foundation of the city.
